Wow. You've just described how I feel about my job to a T. Have you ever thought of starting your own business? One where you can do the work you want, the way you want it.

I'm determined not to spend the rest of my life in my current job (or a new similar job), but it will never change unless I change it.

Hey I can relate. I have run a small business, which has often had to polish turds, so to speak, for every year the web's been around. Its a demoralising repetitious trend, which is a cycle, of finance dependent behavior. I think the key is to break free, from the cycle, but I'm still stuck within it. I think there is not much meaning in the work, but there is in the results the work can help generate. Small gains can help people turn around their lives, businesses, their hope, their dreams. Polishing someones turd, so to speak, can be giving them the little extra they need, in order to maintain a dream, or a line of hope, which perhaps keeps them from feeling the same melancholy, you might experience.

Weird. The Ian I know is one of the more tenacious and driven people I have met, recovering from his youthful stumbles quite gracefully and discovering his impressive talents through sheer, unflappable curiosity. He's the kind of guy who does good work simply because he wants to and recognizes that good work is its own reward, no matter how much frustrating shit he has to deal with to succeed in that work and reap that reward. Who wrote this post?
